Frequently Asked Questions
INSTALLATION QUESTIONS
OPERATION QUESTIONS
How do I find out if I have Microsoft's Installer software loaded on my machine?
Urbemis is distibuted as an MSI package. This means that the Microsoft Windows Installer is used to install and configure
the Urbemis program to run on your computer.
Most versions of the Windows operating system after Windows 98 will have this software already available as part of the operating
system.
To determine if the Windows Installer software is loaded on your machine, run the MSIEXEC command from the Start -> Run dialog
(click on the Start menu, then select Run. Type the word: MSIEXEC on the line that says Open, then select the OK button).
If the Windows Installer is on your computer, a message will be displayed providing information about the version of the installer.
Any version greater than 2.0 is fine. If the installer is not loaded, you will
receive a warning such as 'windows cannot find msiexec'. If this happens, you need to download and install the Windows Installer
application, one time.
Follow these links to obtain a copy of the MSI installer application:
Do I have to save the Install_Urbemis_8_7.msi and Insta1.cab files on my system?
No, the two files Install_urbemis_8_7.msi and Insta1.cab can be deleted after you have successfully installed Urbemis on your
system.
How do I allow multiple people to share the same version of the Urbemis program?
Version 8.7 of Urbemis includes a command line parameter that can be used to direct individual users to their own directory
of projects. The steps for this setup are:
- Install Urbemis on a server. Start the program and open one of the project files that ships with Urbemis. Exit Urbemis.
This process will cause a new file named directry.sav to be created in the same directory as the Urbemis executable.
- Create new Project2k2 directories for each user. For example, if you had two users, msmith and tjones, you could name the
two new directories msmithProject2k2 and tjonesProject2k2.
These directories should contain the two projects that are shipped with Urbemis in the Project2k2 directory: Large Project
Example.urb and Small Project Example.urb.
- A new directry.sav file, with a unique name, needs to be created for each user. Copy the directry.sav file and rename the
file with names such as msmith.sav and tjones.sav.
Edit each of these directory files so that the project directory points to the appropriate directory for each user. In addition,
change the drive and path location for all lines.
The drive and path must be consistent with the mapped drive created on a users machine (see the next two steps). So the resulting
file named msmith.sav might look like:
- msmith.sav
- "E:\UserSpace\URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7\msmithProjects2k2"
- "E:\UserSpace\URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7\emfac2k2"
- "E:\UserSpace\URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7"
- "E:\UserSpace\URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7\Defaults2k2"
- On each user's machine, create a mapped drive pointing to the location of the Urbemis executable.
It is not necessary to map the drive all the way down to the directory holding the executable. Just make sure that the mapping
is consistent with the .sav file created in the previous step.
You may already have mapped drives that can be used
- On each user's machine, create a shortcut to the Urbemis executable. Make sure and use the mapped drive notation in the shortcut.
On the target line of the shortcut, include the parameter dir=msmith.sav (note that these .sav files MUST be in the same directory
as the Urbemis executable.)
For example, the target line may look like: E:\UserSpace\URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7\Urb2002WinV8_7.exe dir=msmith.sav or possibly:
Z:\Urb2002WinV8_7.exe dir=tjones.sav
This command line parameter will instruct the Urbemis program to open the specified .sav file and use its contents to determine
the directory locations of files.
What if I get a message indicating a missing file named SCRRUN.DLL?
Urbemis relies on an operating system dependent file called SCRRUN.DLL. Microsoft recommends that this file not be shipped
embedded into an installation program.
Instead, they have created a web site for users to download and install this file. Follow these links to install this file:
How do I start the Urbemis program?
The Urbemis installation should create a shortcut both on your desktop and in the start menu. Double click this shortcut
to start the program.
If these shortcuts were not installed, right click the My Computer icon on your desktop, select Explore, and navigate to the
Program Files directory.
The file Urb2002WinV8_7.exe should be found in the URBEMIS 2002 Version 8.7 directory. It is possible that a different location
was entered during the installation of Urbemis.
In that case, you must navigate to the entered directory and double click the Urb2002WinV8_7.exe file.
How can I get help on individual screens in Urbemis?
While running Urbemis, help screens are available by hitting the F1 key on your keyboard. Or, select Help and then Contents
from the horizontal menu bar in Urbemis.
